Sunburns happen so fast - you need to be aware to keep sunscreen and protection on! Make sure to protect yourself and your family from the sun – sun burns and too much exposure run the risk of eventually causing skin cancer - repeated sunburn can set up skin cancer later. I know of too many people who have had to get sun damage removed from their skin – and lucky for them it wasn't cancer. But it just as easily could have been. It was frightening and painful – now they believe in protection. Too much exposure also ages skin - and makes it look old, wrinkled, and feels leathery. It is equally important to protect your eyes from the sun's rays - use UV protected sunglasses diligently. Wear clothing and a hat to protect, and sunscreen where unprotected.

Sun Exposure - Don't burn in the sun and risk skin cancer! Protect yourself with a safe non-toxic sunscreen SPF 30. Don't forget your lips, either. Wear a hat, stay out of the sun from 10am-2pm, and use sunglasses. However, do spend some time in the sun without protection, perhaps 15 minutes a day, for 3 days a week - not enough to burn you, but perhaps enough to all you to get a dose of much needed vitamin D. It's now a concern that people are not getting enough of this through food sources, and need some sun exposure.

Sunscreen and sun protection is still important even in the winter. The sun is just as powerful and snow reflects it back on us intensely. Slap it on before skiing and being outdoors. Ever get a sunburn on your nose when skiing? You blow your nose and take off the sunscreen you applied! Keep reapplying! Use the ZeBug below to keep your sunscreen/lip balm always available!

Also, be aware there are ingredients in many sunscreens that can be harmful - certain oils and ingredients can hurt sensitive or allergic people, and there is no list of inactive ingredients in most sunscreens, so you have no idea what is in them, and they could be toxic. Schools require a doctor's permission slip to allow a child to keep and use sunscreen at school - does that tell you there have been problems? Kids aren't allowed to share their sunscreens for liability purposes. This should raise a red flag.

Use sunscreen diligently. We do, and we don't get tough, leathery skin, early wrinkling, or burns when we use it. Just a natural sun look - not dark. We use SPF 30 as recommended by my doctor for my light and sun-sensitive skin (being of Nordic background).

Not all sunscreens work the same - better ingredients for maximum filtering out of harmful rays include zinc oxide, avobenzene, and titanium oxide.

Don't forget lip balm with SPF protection.

And when I got a sunburn (only a few minutes outside without the sunscreen), only the after-sun product - Rebound - helped to soothe and heal my skin. An amazing, fast healing product, and with a really bad sunburn, I didn't even peel! Protect yourself from skin cancer by keeping the sun's deadly rays blocked. Totally non-toxic.

You may want to opt to use tanning agents rather than rely on the sun to give a nice tan. There are great products that work well, with good coloring.

To further protect your skin from other harsh or harmful elements, such as swimming pool water (full of chlorine and chemicals), use Barrier Cream - in the Skin Care section.

If you want a sun tan, don't use a tanning bed or stay out in the sun. Use sun protection when out in the sun, and use a safe tanning agent as above to enhance the look of a tan.

Sun Safety Tips:

Slip on a hat for your head (ever had your head burn? It hurts and the skin peels off like a bad case of dandruff!).

Stay out of the direct sun as much as possible between 10 AM and 2 PM, when the rays are most intense.

Clouds can allow the sun's rays to burn the skin - diffusing the rays. Water and snow reflect the rays back on us. Use the suncreen whenever you are out.

Wear sunscreen when out in the sun. A good one will have an SPF factor of at least 15 (ok for darker skin). Lighter skin should get a 25 or higher SPF. 25 or 30 seems sufficient – the protection after that point doesn't seem to do anything much differently. Use a lip balm with sunscreen, as well. You might only find an SPF of 10 in a lip balm, but use one with sunscreen. Make sure you reapply sunscreen every 2-3 hours, unless you have a long acting one and stay out of the water.
