Swallow Big Fat Pills
Do you have trouble trying to swallow big fat pills? Need a trick to swallow them?
Why do manufacturers of medicines and supplements make big tablets and big fat pills that give people trouble swallowing? Sometimes they set off a gag reflex that one can’t get over and then can’t continue to swallow pills. Wouldn’t it be better to make smaller pills and set the timing to take 2-3 smaller ones?
For the time this is the only choice, here is a trick I use to swallow them. How I swallow big fat pills: get some water in your mouth, then put the pill in. Tilt your head back and swallow pills without thinking about it. If you stress, your throat will tighten. If it didn’t go down, try again later as your throat will be tense and you will just get frustrated, then more tense. At this point there is no chance of swallowing with a drink until you calm things down. Dry the pill off and leave it until a later try, or keep reading. Don’t let it dissolve while waiting for a more opportune time.
Another trick to swallow them is to do as you would for a pet – put it in some food. Have chewed food in your mouth and put your big fat pills in right before swallowing – a banana works great. They should go right down, one at a time. If you aren’t supposed to take the pill with food, just take a small amount of food, like a small cracker or an banana slice, so it’s just a small bit of food.
If the pill can be split (if it’s scored), you can use this trick to swallow it and take it in smaller pieces. Then it might be easier to swallow when smaller. This obviously won’t work with capsules. It also won’t work with time-release pills – they need to dissolve slowly from the outside to middle (if you expose the middle, the time release won’t work – if in doubt, check with your doctor). Make sure you will take your whole dose one after another.
