How to Check Your Eggs at the Store
How to check your eggs when buying or how to tell if you have a bad egg.
To check your eggs when you buy a package of eggs at the store, open the package (if you can – some are sealed), and put your thumb on one egg and one finger on the egg on the other side. Jiggle your fingers – if the eggs stick and don’t move, it’s a sure sign that there is a bad egg – one or both are broken. If they move freely, they are good. If you cannot open the package, gently turn it upside down to make sure no eggs are sticking.
Use your eggs within a couple or so weeks from buying. They can get old. There’s nothing like baking a cake or making eggs with a bad egg that breaks open with black stuff and smells. If you are lucky, you saw it before adding it in, but it’s happened here and the whole mess goes bad because it mixed in too much by being runny. As you break one open to use, check that it is ok first before adding it to something – break them into a separate bowl first.
