Ancient Ayurveda Healing and Prevention…

How did people take care of themselves long ago?

There are time tested cures and preventative measures that go back in history. I’ve been taking some of it on while discovering Ayurvedic methods. Other Eastern practices are intriguing, and I will explore these as well.

My exposure to Ayurveda has made a difference for me. I am healthier, with better memory, calmness, and not looking my age. Ayurvedic is literally the “science of life.”

Ayurveda therapy – there are routines, medicines, practices, that help heal, rejuvenate, detox, and give peace.

I do oil pulling every day. I explain oil pulling in another blog post. For me, I have no more pain in my teeth. I used to have pus build-up at night, in my mouth, which seemed to come from my teeth. I assumed I had an infection in my mouth or teeth. This is not happening anymore. My mouth seems healed, and my teeth don’t hurt. This is a good, simple Ayurveda therapy.

I use Ayurvedic essential oils, namely frankincense and rosemary. Rosemary has helped my memory and I sniff it every day. The frankincense is inhaled and rubbed (not straight oil but added to a neutral oil) on my wrists and the bottom of my feet. I feel better during the day – I can’t explain but I find peace and calm. Other oils used in Ayurveda include tulsi (Holy Basil), neem (I brush my teeth with a neem toothpaste), turmeric, jojoba, and licorice (or anise). There are more and I will explore them as well with time.

I use Ayurvedic herbs and spices – mostly turmeric combined with other spices – but I use turmeric pretty much daily (make sure to combine with black pepper and an oil, maybe even ginger). I use fennel frequently and eat the bulb in meals. I also use cinnamon, cardamom, ginger, and nutmeg daily. Other Ayurvedic spices include cumin, coriander (I love using coriander!), saffron (I grow saffron sativus crocus for my own saffron fronds), fenugreek, basil, and black pepper. I use Himalayan rock salt, which is also believed to be better in Ayurveda.

I use a neti pot with diluted sea salt solution, as used in Ayurveda therapy. It flushes the sinuses and helps you with fighting infection. It helps clear the sinuses. I no longer have nights of not being able to breathe out of one or both nostrils.

I practice dry brushing, as well as using a brush in the shower. Dry brushing your skin helps your circulation, exfoliation, and stimulating your lymphatic system (which works to remove waste in your cellular system). Dry brushing may help break down toxins. This is also found in roots of Ayurveda.

Yoga is an old Ayurvedic therapy. It promotes calm, self-reflection, and helps build muscle strength (and healing for certain types of injuries).

Massage is an Ayurvedic therapy. Using Ayurveda oils, massage promotes calmness, relaxation, circulation, and removes toxins. You should feel rejuvenated and invigorated but may also feel a bit spent. Make sure to drink water after a massage.

Mud baths are healing, and their roots are in Ayurveda. They draw out toxins and impurities. They nourish and exfoliate your skin.

Tapping and pressure therapy go way back to Ayurveda. It is based on certain relationships in an area of your body to other areas of your body – as in pressure points on the bottom of your feet that may help other areas to rejuvenate other areas, like your adrenal glands, colon and bladder, etc. Tapping (EFT) can help anxiety, remove emotional blocks, and help body circulation, for example. Tapping areas and getting a rhythm in certain areas can excite and stimulate certain systems.

Other foods/additives that are used in Ayurvedic therapy include almonds, coconut, ghee, Ashwagandha and psyllium.

Ayurveda is fascinating and there is so much more to learn. Ayurveda began in India as a way to get in tune with self and earth, to heal and be healthy. Alternative ways to promote healing and to prevent afflictions are so important to me.
