Need More PT Sessions than Approved?
If you run out of prescribed physical therapy or other medical sessions, you can pay out-of-pocket at a reduced price per extra session.
You might not even have any health insurance so you can go to appointments as needed if you ask for a self-pay option, which might be less than the regular out-of-pocket charge. Make sure to ask if the amount would be different – it was for me.
I have had a limit of 20 physical therapy sessions per year covered by insurance, so I only paid a co-payment per session. Once the 20 sessions are done, I needed go to out-of-pocket payments, and for the last few years that has ranged from $70-75 per appointment. In fact, when I first started sessions during COVID, even though insurance had the facility in their network, it did not cover any physical therapy sessions at all, so they set me up for out-of-pocket only payments. It was the only facility in my area that was even open during COVID. I had no choice but to just pay the out-of- pocket costs.
Make sure you tell them you are self-pay to get a reduced amount to pay. Tell the front office before you start your session or when you make the appointment. You do not need a prescription to go get physical therapy sessions when you do self-pay, unless the particular facility requires it.
If you need more physical therapy sessions than you have a prescription for, just pay out of pocket and get the reduced cost. Check what the amount is first, to make sure that you can afford it. If not, call a different physical therapist and ask what that office charges for their out of pocket pay per session. If you are paying out-of-pocket, also make sure you do not need a prescription.
