Is Fever Bad or Even a Good Thing?

Is fever bad? Or is it ok to let the fever go on? Use a reliable thermometer instead of a hand feel for a good read.

Fever is a way the body fights a sickness – the temperature goes up to kill the threatening germs. My little one used to spike up to 106 degrees over and over again when sick. That is too high and had to come down. If around 99-100 or maybe up 101, you might let the fever run itself out before using medications to bring it down. You could use a cold bath or cold washcloth to help. Fever can heal – it’s not always bad to let a fever run its course but not a high fever.

If you have a fever, drink lots of fluids, and I mean lots. Water is best but probiotic drinks are also good, and well as some others but not the sodas and unhealthy drinks.

If a low-grade fever, let it run its course because it’s possible that fever heals you. Make yourself comfortable but don’t take medications to bring the fever down – the fever may be killing off a sickness that’s trying to get to you. If you take fever reducing meds, you might keep a sickness from resolving itself.

If a high-grade fever, 102 or more (for some a 101 may be too high), use a combination of acetaminophen (like Tylenol) then after 4 hours take Ibuprofen (like Motrin), then after 4 hours back to Tylenol and continue this until the fever breaks.

When is a fever bad? Anything over 100 can be, depending on the person. 102 is usually tolerable for a short time, but 103 or more is too high. Do call the doctor at 101 to get advice. It’s important to know when a fever is “too much” for a person to deal with. If it’s not too high, it’s better to let it do its job in fighting your illness.
