Foods and medicines may have incompatibility issues. Medicine strength may be enhanced or lost with these incompatible interactions.

Medicine incompatibility issues happen so much – you need to find out what medicines should not be taken together – plus incompatible foods.

When prescribed a medication, read the insert, and do a search for what you should and should not eat, drink, take supplements for, and whether other medications could have incompatible interactions with the new one. Also ask your doctor and the pharmacist. Research on the Internet for what supplements and foods react with your medicine or have incompatibility interactions – often you don’t get any guidance from your doctor.

Take heed of side effect warning signs to watch for and call your doctor immediately if you notice any side effects – listed or not. On that note – if you think you should ask your doctor for a medicine that is advertised on TV, pay attention to the mentioned side-effects (many are unacceptable). Your doctor should know about the medicine incompatibility with your other prescriptions, foods, and conditions. Discuss It with your doctor, with any pros and cons (do not try to convince your doctor of a medicine you saw an advertisement for – you don’t know how it reacts with your condition or other care), or if you really need one or another type of medication.

For example, for a certain blood thinner (I had to take a couple types after blood clots), you should not have any cranberries or cranberry juice, no grapefruit, and no supplements of Vitamin K, ginger, garlic, or turmeric (curcumin). Cranberry, grapefruit, and grapefruit juice will offset the effect of some blood thinners – so avoid them. You should limit the number of foods with such mentioned vitamins – like many greens, which contain Vitamin K (limit the amount you eat). These were not listed on the insert so there was no guidance on foods. Googling medical websites gave more food incompatibility information.

Grapefruit or its juice can play havoc with many medications – it can enhance a medicine strength or negate a medicine. Ask your doctor if you should avoid grapefruit for any of your medications. There are a lot of medications that grapefruit might affect – you can Google for some lists.

Coffee should not be taken a full 1/2 hour either way of taking iron – plus iron is absorbed better with citrus.

There are so many incompatibilities (and good pairings). So for your meds and supplements, research on your own and ask your doctor or pharmacist.

You want to be certain your medicine does the job you are needing it to do. Don’t dilute or enhance the effects by adding foods and supplements that are incompatible with your medicines.
