Social Media Tips – Facebook Scams and Facebook Messenger Scams
Scammers, spammers and other people up-to-no-good are taking advantage of people every way they can. Be aware of the ways they try to trick you, and don’t fall for them. Facebook and other social media scams are rampant. Facebook Messenger scams are being used to cause havoc. Be smart and wary!
DON’T CLICK ON LINKS IN FACEBOOK MESSENGER that ask if it’s you in a video or say they got a friend request from you (anything clickable that you aren’t expecting) – once you click on it, it sends the same message to all your contacts. Once they get it and click, it goes to their contacts and you’ll probably get it back again. I just go to my laptop and click the 3 dots on the side of the message that give me more options – one being to remove the comment. You can also remove the entire conversation if you don’t have anything important to go back and look for. Trust me – you weren’t hacked – it’s a bot that just propagates the message onward. Facebook Messenger scams are all too common.The same messages now appear in the regular Facebook feeds.I’ve been seeing OMG someone we know died in an accident ones.
IF YOU GET A FRIEND REQUEST FROM SOMEONE YOU ARE ALREADY FRIENDS WITH – first ask the friend if it’s him or her (once a friend of mine forget her login, and instead of asking for a re-set of password, she set up a new account) – most of the time it’s a clone (ask in a FB post on her original page or send a message to the original friend asking if she sent a friend request to you because she might be cloned). Once you friend the clone, the clone has access to your friends and information. The clone may eventually ask for money or post memes and links that lead to harvesting more information from you or your contacts. The clone will usually send friend requests to all your friends he can access.
Social media scams – even the quizzes, face aging, what past historical figure were you – all are potentially harvesting your information and using it in ways to be seen later. Sometimes it’s to find ways to hack into your passwords because you tend to put your information down that could be what you use as a password. Facebook scams keep increasing!
Social media scams have been happening in the past but resurrecting the ugly heads more often again, with new types added all the time.
