Deflect Pain so Not to Feel Pain
When you are at the dentist or going through another painful procedure (blood draw, shot or something) that may hurt, it helps to draw pain away from that place – deflect pain away from the impending hurt. Pain deflection is helpful to get relief and not to feel pain in another area.
My trick is that I dig a fingernail or other finger into my hand to cause some discomfort that makes me concentrate on that over the other pain – to deflect pain away from the area being worked on. Be certain not to break your skin, though.
As for a blood draw, don’t even look at the area so not to feel nauseous nor get anxious from the blood. Look away and think of something else. Do dig your fingernail into your hand to distract the thought of pain if you need to. Pain from the needle poke is deflected to your fingernail-caused dig-in. Important – drink a lot of water, starting the day prior to a blood draw, to make sure your blood flows well and veins are easy to find.
At the dentist, (during x-rays, in particular), “breathe through your nose and wiggle your toes” to keep from gagging – it works well. Think of a way to detract from the feeling of gagging by concentrating on something else (there may be discomfort from the x-ray positioning as well).
While dental work is being done, you might feel nauseous or anxious or feel the pain (whether you can truly feel pain or imagining it), so refer the pain away to another spot again – dig your fingernail into your hand to deflect pain away and not to feel pain .
Deflect your pain from what you are feeling to another area so lessen the effect and feel relief in the area and not to feel pain in the affected area. Dig your fingernail into your hand to feel pain there instead, or figure some other trick.
