Empty Your Scattered Thoughts

Hand writing on paper with black pen.

My high school English teacher wisely taught me to, as he called it, “gush” – which was to unload my brain’s thoughts before writing and then pull the connected thoughts out to start writing about.

Once you get all the “stuff” cleaned out of your head, you can scratch out the junk and put the real thoughts into some order to write about. Empty your scattered thoughts onto paper.

The good thing about vomiting your thoughts onto paper is that you can unload a lot of stuff that is keeping you from thinking straight. It’s a great way to get over writer’s block, too. Just unload your thoughts and then organize them. Make an outline and then continue to write more to add in more information that you can think of.

My term papers were written using this technique. It’s a good exercise to get out all your thoughts (of all sorts) spit out. You might evoke a memory of something important, and it might lead to another answer to something different.

So, feel free to gush and spit out all your thoughts. Then write away…
