Do Not Feed Leftovers to Pets

Skip the leftovers and people foods unless you KNOW it's safe for your dog. Here are some toxic foods for dogs you should avoid. Don’t feed leftovers to your pets unless you know what is in them – no onions, garlic, bread, white potato, salt, and much more. These ingredients can create serious issues in their systems and negatively impact dog nutrition.

A family member kept giving his dog leftovers from meals he didn’t finish, and eventually, the dog refused to eat his own dog food. After a couple of years on that poor diet, the dog started having diarrhea in the house without any warning. This continued for days. One day, very suddenly, the dog’s legs gave out due to severe arthritis. The dog lost all will to continue. He could not even stumble to the car, much less get in or out of it. Sadly, the dog passed away from failed organs.

This situation highlights the importance of proper dog nutrition. The dog wasn’t getting the right nutrients and consumed too many empty calories. The leftovers contained ingredients that are awful for dogs, like onions, salt, butter, and potentially xylitol—each of which is toxic for dogs and can lead to serious health issues. The dog’s health deteriorated rapidly, and many dogs can develop cancer from eating a bad diet; in this case, it resulted in stomach issues and severe arthritis.

I prepare my own dog food for my dog, Rascal, and I portion out unseasoned food scraps like carrot shavings, steamed asparagus, raw broccoli stems, green bean ends, raw cabbage pieces, cooked sweet potato skins, apples without seeds, watermelon, and pumpkin into bags for the freezer. I only give my dog what is unseasoned and healthy dog treats.

Additionally, I blend those frozen fruits and vegetables into Rascal's food, along with other ingredients I’ve researched for optimal dog nutrition. You can also give produce scraps as treats—carrot sticks or green beans make great, low-calorie, nutritious treats.

Prolong the life and health of your dog (and other pets) by only feeding approved foods and treats in the proper proportions.
