I think my Finnish roots might play a role for in this, but I feel that contentment is more accurate than happiness as a sustainable feeling or emotion. After all, Finland has been voted as the “Happiest Country” many years in a row – it’s not a euphoric happy but more of contentment.
When you are happy it’s usually fleeting and not lasting for long. You might be happy for some weeks of months (if you just had a baby, or just got married, for example). The actual happiness lasts for some time, but then things get to become a normal or even a challenge. The happy feeling tapers off and if not sad or angry or such, contentment becomes the normal life emotion.
Contentment is a normal sustainable feeling. Happiness comes in waves and often disappears. It doesn’t last constantly or forever. Contentment can last as a constant feeling. I advocate for contentment over happiness.
What makes you happy? Does the happiness last or become contentment?
